Corona Virus (CO-VID 19) Information and Resources from New York City

As of March 13, 2020, both New Dawn Charter Schools are open and in session. In this time, we would like to provide our parents and families with helpful information about the virus, precautions you can take to stay healthy, and support our community.

Brooklyn and Jamaica schools will be closing at 2:00 p.m. for professional development and thorough cleaning of both facilities for the next 48 hours. Check back frequently for updates and information as it is on-going.

Remember, we are in this together and owe it to everyone to practice safe hygiene, self-care, and we are here to maintain a healthy environment, physically and mentally.

Recommendations as we continue as a community:

Wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.

Cover your mouth when you cough, sneeze, or yawn.

If any of your students or family members are known to be ill or have symptoms described in the attachments, please be sure to stay home. Absences are not being affected in New York City for students.

It is all of our responsibility to limit exposure, but also to be realistic and compassionate about those around us.

  • Dr. Asmussen Presents at the Alternative Accountability Policy Forum in California

Founding Executive Director, Dr. Sara Asmussen and Founding Principal, Dr. Lisa DiGaudio, will travel to San Diego, California this week to attend and present at the Alternative Accountability Policy Forum. This is an educational policy conference from SIA Tech and RASPA (Reaching at-Promise Students Association).

From AAPF, Dr. Asmussen will be addressing: "Measuring outcomes of transfer schools, that primarily serve students who are over-aged and under-credited, using traditional outcome measures paints an incomplete picture of the academic and developmental impact that these schools have on at-risk students. Traditional evaluative measures also pose difficulty for the schools and their authorizers. These schools receive negative ratings for the graduation rates and high school exit exam participation, resulting in them being labeled “failing schools.” To tell the whole story, this session will feature measures and potential ideas for alternative accountability frameworks that accurately describe the progress of a transfer school’s educational program and will discuss and seek feedback regarding national initiatives such as the “A-GAME” (Advancing Great Authorizing & Modeling Excellence) grant, funded through U.S. D.O.E. C.S.P. dissemination funds, that are bringing authorizers from around the country together to develop exemplars for alternative accountability performance frameworks."
