  • New Dawn Board Member Honored

    Congratulations to Board of Trustees member Samir Souidi for his breakthrough work in technology, helping people in refugee camps. Very proud of our founding Board member for the recognition of this very important, groundbreaking work.

    InsideNGO honored Samir Souidi, Enterprise Systems/Software Architect at Population Council, with its 2016 Excellence Award in Information Technology at its annual conference, Achieving Global Impact, in Washington, DC, last evening.

    The InsideNGO Excellence Awards were established in 2010 to recognize professionals within the development sector who are innovating, collaborating, and ensuring operational excellence within their organizations. Souidi’s nomination, submitted by Population Council’s Stan Mierzwa, Director of Information Technology and James Sailer, VP of Corporate Affairs, lauded his development of a breakthrough tool that collects data in refugee camps, allowing more timely, accurate, and extensive research to be conducted among the camps’ vulnerable populations. This type of tool had never been used in refugee camps previously, due to challenges such as low literacy levels and the multiple languages spoken by refugees, as well as interruptions in power and Internet services. Souidi’s tool has also been recognized by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID).

    “InsideNGO recognizes the value that strong operational units bring to mission-driven NGOs,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Dente of InsideNGO at the awards ceremony, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. “IT plays a critical role in the NGO community—in terms of communication, data management, and innovating new products that serve people in need. Samir Souidi, through his commitment to excellence, is contributing to our shared mission of achieving global impact in addressing some of the world’s most pressing social issues.”

    Winners were chosen from among 50 nominations submitted by InsideNGO member organizations across the US and internationally earlier this year. Nominators were asked to submit detailed recommendations explaining how their nominees demonstrated a commitment to NGO operational excellence. The other award winners recognized during the ceremony included:

    Line Kewe of Literacy Bridge in Seattle, WA, and the Programs System Unit from Pathfinder International in Watertown, MA, (tie) for Excellence in Cross Operations
    Dr. Si Thura of Community Partners International in Yangon, Myanmar, the Emerging Leader Award
    Elizabeth Atherton of Nuru International in Irvine, CA, for Excellence in Finance
    Ken Repp of Education Development Center in Waltham, MA, for Excellence in Grants & Contracts
    Bonnie Karns of International City/County Management (ICMA) in Washington, DC, for Excellence in Human Resources
    Nearly 1,100 development practitioners from 198 different organizations attended InsideNGO’s annual conference this year, making it one of the largest gatherings of professionals in the relief and development community.

Careers with New Dawn

If you are up for a challenge and one of the most rewarding jobs in education, New Dawn Charter High School may be the place for you. As a transfer school we serve some of the most at-risk students in NYC those who are over-aged and under-credited. We invite people to apply who are motivated by a challenge and are capable of navigating some of the most challenging learning and instructional issues in the City. If you believe that an equitable education is a human rights issue and that all students deserve a high quality education, regardless of their learning or social/emotional issues, then this may be the place for you.

Ways in which we are different from traditional schools and benefits:

• You will work with some of the most interesting and deserving students in NYC—those who have been left behind, for a variety of reasons, by more traditional organizations;

• Every day will provide not only challenges but opportunities to reach students and leave you with the knowledge that you have in fact made a difference is someone's life;

• Ongoing daily support for you and unlimited opportunities for professional development;

• A principal who not only teaches a class and allows all teachers to observe while she models behaviors but will come to your class and support you in achieving your individual goals for personal growth;

• Peer Committees made up of teachers who visit each other's classrooms and make suggestions to each other with no administrative input;

• Professional Learning Communities who address school-wide issues;

• A very strong support staff who understand that the point of the school is to provide opportunities to students and that their job is to support this goal;

• We are a full year school running on from September through June and then July through mid-August;

• Summer session is only a half day but is necessary for our students to graduate;

• We work from 9 to 5 September through June with an hour at the end of the day for professional development and addressing school-wide issues;

• Instruction is informed by actual data collected by teachers in the classroom and analyzed through the PerfPlus Programs;

• Teachers and staff participate in Instructional Rounds with other schools involved in the PICCS project, this is done by visiting schools, conducting classroom observations and developing problems of practice that impact us all;

• Opportunities to become trained and certified in the Danielson Classroom Observation Rubric; and

• Access to professional developers from TERC Using Data, Danielson, Metamorphis, A.L.L., among others.

Benefits we offer to all staff:

Just like our students, we welcome teachers who do not necessarily fit into a traditional model, are beginning their careers, or who have retired--as long as they are willing to work as a team for the betterment of the students.
